Often, when I decide to print, I go through a custom printing house. After trying a few different companies and getting samples of prints and papers and whatnot, I settled on White House Custom Color. I've been using them for just over a year without issue. They're out in Minnesota, so you know they're nice humans, and they also do a good job at a fair price. Their turn around is quick and they can blind drop ship to your clients. Normally
I don't do family portrait type things. But, seeing as it's the holiday season and Cliff asked me oh so nice if I'd help him out, I decided to give it a try. I don't do this sort of thing normally so I found it to be rather frustrating...anyways...here's the four of them.
Maxine Beuret
I've been looking at her work a lot recently. An English photographer, she shoots a lot of interiors...spaces. I really like it. It's quietly beautiful and timeless. She makes photographs I wish I would have.

Site Clean up
After a business lunch on Tuesday, before my flight back from Los Angeles, I decided to clean up and re-focus my website. I'm starting to see my work shift more seriously into the foodstuff I began solely as a laugh. I've also seen a shift in the way I photograph people.
An interior designer friend of mine, Justine, is going to be launching her website www.justinedawson.com soon, and I'm going to be taking her portrait for the site. She's a really creative and rad chick and I look forward to making sure others will see that.
Oh, I was nominated for PDN's 30 2009. I'm pretty stoked on this. I read this issue every year so it's pretty rad to have my images at least in the ring. Madddlove to Maren Levinson and Redeye out in Los Angeles. They've been more than nice to a former cook with a camera. I'm currently putting together my selection of photographs for submission. Then we'll see..oh life.

Back from Los Angeles
I've returned from my week of working with Mark Robert Halper. I kept my eyes open and learned a lot, both good and bad. I definitely took away a few good lessons on the world of photography. For that, I thank him.
I found myself with a day off. While LA was nice and warm, Denver is getting a bit chillychillychilly and I wanted something warm in my belly. Mushroom risotto is a comfort food of mine. It's super simple, it just takes time. I'll have the recipe up on my website later on tonight....

Los Angeles
I've been in since Wednesday. We've been pretty busy with two 14 hour days back to back. I'll write more and post some images once i get back and get a chance to breathe.
The Fog Rolled In
The weather has officially turned in Denver. This next week is suppose to be in the high fifties and low sixties with rain showers and fog. I can dig it. Daniel's Park is outside my back door. Its basically a place for coyotes and cows to hang out.
Buddy Lee and Ariana
So I have spent some time with my new marrying friends, taking their photograph and talking about everything. They're two good people. I know I've said it before, but I have very much enjoyed meeting the both of them. Along with the photographs I've made, I've also built them a website to work in conjunction with the wedding invitations. By no means am I a web designer/graphic designer, but I tried my best. I guess it kind of looks like my site. But what do I know about web design, really?! In the end, my friends are happy, which makes me happy. I have two more images to make that will be added to the formal gallery. Our schedules have been in two different directions as of late, but I hope the three of us can get together soon. Anyways, here it is.

An Old Photograph
I took this image in either June or July '07. It's of Mowich Lake, a small and fairly secluded mountain lake near the entrance to the Mt. Rainier National Park. A few years ago my parents moved to a tiny town called Carbonado that sits in the shadow of the mountain. They have a sick view of Rainier from their back deck and this beauty lake is right down the road.
Home
I spent the last six days back home in Seattle to a be a groomsman in the wedding of my best friend. I met Derek when I was in eighth grade and Keeb, quite literally, the first day of school the following year. These boys are my brothers. It was oh so nice to be back for a bit and see these two. 
First
Fun day today. I took my younger cousin Chris to the movies. We saw Hancock. Not much of a movie but it's definitely candy for the eyeballs. Then we went back to David's for dinner and hangouts. Anyways, after I got home I was going through my Lightroom album and came across a portrait I had taken of my dog Jack back in the Summer of '07. I had rented a bedroom in someone's apartment that was above an optometrists office on a commercial side street back in New York. A couple of months prior I had purchased my first Speedlight ever, after being a Strobist reader for a quite some time. After thinking about it for a second, I realized that this was the first portrait that I had ever taken with my flash OFF of my camera, a SB-600 camera right and bounced into the wall with a white curtain. I believe it was fired with that V2 Ebay trigger. I don't think I begun to explore the CLS system at that point. Up until that time, my whole life was spent shooting strictly with available light. This journey into learning about strobes and lighting has been pretty rad. I've become a better photographer because of it. It's the capture beauty/make beauty thing about images that I've talked about before. Anyways.
Timothy Archibald
I've been caught up reading San Francisco based editorial photographer, Timothy Archibald's, blog recently. I enjoy it because, while his website is aimed at getting jobs and maintaining his business, his blog is more aimed at his personal work and thought on the business as a whole. He had a book published a few years ago, Sex Machines, about inventors of pornographic well...sex machines. i really like the work he put out for the book. it's slightly strange yet straight forward. i can dig it. i also really like the personal work he's doing now. he's working with images and scans revolving around his five year old son. trying to get inside the head of a child. it seems as if he doesn't even know where this series is going, but it's been fun to watch it's progression.
Lighting Breakdown
I figured I would breakdown my lighting set up for one of my recent images. Maybe one of my three readers will benefit from it.. :) The light was super simple, super minimal. I tried using as much available light as i could so the image would benefit as much as possible from the beautiful early evening light. The rest is pretty much self explanatory.
New Images.
I continued shooting my marrying friends. We went to the Red Rocks Amphitheater as well at the tiny neighboring town of Morrison. These are the two images I finished with.
A Favor for Friends
Two of my Colorado friends, Buddy Lee and Ariana, are getting married in December. I don't do weddings or couples or anything like that, but they asked me to help out and make some images....and I agreed. They are two really good humans and I was happy to do what I could, but my only condition was that I didn't want to do a typical couples shoot. I wanted to be able to make images that all parties involved would enjoy but definitely didn't look like your typical engagement photographs. We'll be shooting over the next couple weeks at various locations in the Denver area.
